Rodent in spaghetti can was just mould

Rodent in spaghetti canAn Ohio woman who thought she found a rat in her can of Chef Boyardee pasta can rest easy. There was no animal in her supper. It was mould.

After Jennifer Aker became Internet-famous for posting a video to YouTube that showed what appeared to be a small rodent in her can of spaghetti and meatballs, ConAgra Foods - the maker of Chef Boyardee products - asked Aker to freeze the contents until a courier arrived to collect them.

But upon thorough examination and testing of the can, ConAgra Foods has determined there was no rodent in the tomato sauce.

It was mould. A really big, thick, hairy chunk of mould.

"Upon a thorough lab analysis, our food safety experts have confirmed that the substance found in the can of Chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs is mould," company spokesman Dave Jackson said Tuesday.

According to Jackson, the mould was "likely caused by damage to the can during shipping."

He said Aker has been made aware of the findings.

"It's not acceptable for a consumer to receive a product in that condition, and we regret the incident," Jackson said.

All At Sea: Lost Sailor Followed Road Map

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 28, 2010 | 0 comments »
Lost Sailor Followed Road MapA sailor had to be rescued after he ran out of fuel circling a small island when he thought he was sailing around the UK coast.

The man had only a road map for directions and his motor cruiser ran aground off Elmley Marshes on the Isle of Sheppey, off the Kent coast.

The Sheerness lifeboat and the Thames Coastguard went to help and found that the sailor had set off on the river Medway, from Gillingham, only a few miles away and was heading to Southampton on the south coast.

He had no navigation equipment or maritime charts. He told them he had been keeping the coast to his right.

A RNLI spokeswoman said: "He was attempting to travel around the UK from Medway to Southampton and somehow lost his bearings and ended up travelling round the Isle of Sheppey.

"He didn't have the usual maritime charts or navigation equipment."

A Thames Coastguard spokesman said the motor cruiser was towed to Queenborough and officers gave him advice on fuel usage.

It is understood the man then attempted to continue his journey to Southampton.

Hunt on for serial sex killing elephant in south India

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 28, 2010 | | 0 comments »
pictures of elephants in indiaWildlife experts in southern India are hunting a rogue bull elephant who is thought to have gored 12 female tuskers to death because they spurned his sexual advances.

The Times of India said on Wednesday that a 15-member taskforce has been set up to catch the aggressive male, called Alpha, who has been on the run in the jungles of Kerala state for the last three years.

Kerala's chief wildlife warden, K.K. Srivastava, said eight female elephants were found dead in the vast Periyar reserve between February and June last year.

"Post-mortem reports and other evidence suggested that these were caused by the same tusker. Two more females were found dead on March 12 and 21 this year. The nature of injuries point to the same culprit," he told the daily.

Two other deaths have been blamed on 25-year-old Alpha, he added, without specifying when the females were found.

Alpha's behaviour has been blamed on "musth", a surge in the male reproductive hormone testosterone in bull elephants that leads to aggressive behaviour.

Forensic tests have shown that all the victims had puncture marks, indicating that they resisted a male who tried to force himself on them. The wounds matched the dimensions of Alpha's tusks, the newspaper said.

The former deputy director of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, P.P. Pramod, said Alpha needs to have his tusks trimmed but they had to catch and tranquilise him first, which was risky.

"If it fell flat on its chest it will die instantly. So we need to follow it and lift it as soon as he collapses," he was quoted as saying.

'Noah's Ark' discovered on Turkish mountain

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 28, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Noah's Ark discovered on Turkish mountainA group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers believe they may have found Noah's Ark about 4,000 metres up a mountain in Turkey.

The team say they recovered wooden specimens from a structure on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey that carbon dating proved was 4,800 years old, around the same time the ark is said to have been afloat.

Yeung Wing-cheung, a member of the 15-strong team from Noah's Ark Ministries International, says the structure has several compartments, some with wooden beams, which were believed to house animals.

"It's not 100 per cent that it is Noah's Ark but we think it is 99.9 per cent that this is it," he told AFP.

The group has ruled out an established human settlement on the grounds that one had never been found above 3,500 metres in the vicinity.

Mr Yeung says local Turkish officials will ask the central government in Ankara to apply for UNESCO World Heritage status so the site can be protected while a major archaeological dig is conducted.

The biblical story says God decided to flood the earth after seeing how corrupt it had become, and told Noah to build an ark and fill it with two of every animal species.

After the flood waters receded, the Bible says the ark came to rest on a mountain.

Many believe that Mount Ararat, the highest point in the region, is where the ark and its inhabitants came aground.

Elephant helps give broken safari jeep push start

elephant help peopleA frustrated zoo keeper at a UK safari park was given unusual assistance when his jeep broke down… an elephant gave him a push start.

Lawrence Bates was all set to call for assistance to the animal reserve when his jeep broke down, until Five the elephant decided to give him a helping (hand) trunk.

The keeper couldn't believe his eyes as the 18-year-old d African Elephant run behind the jeep and started pushing.

In a matter of seconds the trusty nelly had pushed the car out of trouble and out of the enclosure… and given the AA an idea about replacement staff.

But Five wasn't finished there, she then proved better than most breakdown services as she took the time to give the truck a spring clean with her trusty trunk as part of the free service.

Director of Wildlife at West Midlands Safari Park, Bob Lawrence, said: "I've never seen anything like this in my life - it was absolutely incredible.

"Five and her keeper are a real team. It's said that an Elephant never forgets, thankfully we don't experience many vehicle breakdowns, but next time Five will know exactly what to do."

Smallest mum outgrown by 14-month-old son

Smallest mum on the worldAt just 3ft 1ins tall, Amanda Moore, Britain's smallest mum, must have known it would not be long before her son was taller than her.

But after the rare bone disease which limited her height, also left her unable to stand, 14-month-old Aidan already is.

The 2ft 6ins tot towers above his 25-year-old mom when they are playing together - and she says his size can make him quite a handful.

It's now thought not-so-little Aidan - who did not inherit the disease - could end up closer to his Dad Steven's lanky 6ft 1ins.

Amanda says they are now looking at how she will cope moving him around the house when Steven is at work… she added that he will never be too big for a telling off from his mum." Amanda, who suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta and gave birth by caesarean section last year, said: "I always knew he would be taller than me but he’s shot up.

"When I sit on the floor to play with him, he is taller than me already and he’s only 14 months old.

"He's getting so big and strong that soon we’ll have to tell him to be gentle with mummy."

custom made lamborghini for just 3.000$ - cheapest lambourghini on the worldA Chinese man has built a Lamborghini sports car - for just $3,000.

Chen Jinmiao, 25 - who only has a basic school education - spent a year making the replica model in his spare time because he knew he'd never be able to afford a real one.

He said: "I downloaded the drawings from the internet, and then bought materials from the market."

The car lover from Binzhou created a fully-working vehicle, although his version can only reach a top speed of 50mph compared to a real Lamborghini's 200mph-plus.

Chen must now wait to see if traffic officials will grant him permission to drive the car on the road.

He added: "If they don't, I can have it for my collection at home."

World's smallest horse - Pinto Stallion Einstein

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 26, 2010 | 0 comments »
worlds smallest horseA tiny stallion just 14 inches high is thought to be a record breaker as the world's smallest foal.

Einstein, a pinto stallion, weighed in at just 6lb when he was born on Friday in the US.

Breeder Judy Smith, of Tiz A Miniature Horse Farm, in Barnstead, New Hampshire, said she thought he was dead.

"I have been at this for 20 years plus but I have never seen one this tiny or even close to it.

"At first he didn't move very much. We started rubbing him with a towel and he started to move around. He was so small!"

Breeders say that unlike the current record holder, 9lb Thumbelina, Einstein shows no signs of dwarfism.

Co-owner Charlie Cantrell said: "From the head to the legs - the length, width, height - everything is just beautiful about this little horse."

Fellow owner Dr Rachel Wagner said: "Most of the ones that are really tiny are what we call dwarves and they have some sort of dysmorphic features, or features that aren't really normal or healthy.

"This little guy is like all horses - he's almost all leg."

Millionairess Leaves Daughters 90p Each

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 26, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Former Lady Mayoress Valmai RocheA millionaire socialite has left her daughters less than a pound each because she believed they conspired in her mother's death.

Australian Valmai Roche, who died last year aged 81, bequeathed her children and ex-husband $1.5 AUD "blood money" - worth 90p - from her estate, which is reported to be worth around £2.1m.

But two of her daughters have claimed their mother was "delusional" and are challenging her will in the South Australian Supreme Court.

The former mayoress of Adelaide left "30 pieces of silver of the lowest denomination of currency" to her family - which translates as 30 five cent coins each - claiming it was "blood money due to Judas".

The rest of her fortune was left to the Catholic men's charity Southern Cross, according to Australian newspaper reports.

Her mother Dorothy Maude Haber was cared for in a nursing home before her death, but documents do not say how or when she died.

Ms Roche's daughters - Deborah Hamilton, Fiona Roche and Shauna Roche - can also claim equal shares in their mother's jewellery.

However they must correctly answer questions about her personal diaries which were kept from January 1974 until October 1981, the date her will was written.

But Ms Hamilton has accused her mother of "fixed, false and incorrigible views" over the death of Ms Haber and alleges her "delusions" meant she was incapable of "making a reasonable and proper disposition of her estate".

Along with her sisters she has taken the case to court claiming they should be "entitled to inherit" their mother's fortune.

Ms Roche went as far as to "specifically exclude" her children and ex-husband "from any further benefits" claiming they "have been adequately provided for" during the later years of her life.

Mr Roche, who was Adelaide City Council Lord Mayor from 1975 until 1977, was also excluded from further benefit due to the "irretrievable breakdown" of their marriage in 1983.

Only one change was made to her will in 1987 to bequeath a French Empire style desk to her daughter Fiona, who now heads the family's Roche Group which is regularly listed among the top 200 rich companies in Australia.

Court documents reveal Ms Roche enquired about changing her will in 2007, but no new will could be found.

Lawyers for the family have refused to comment on the case, which returns to court next month.

Ghost sightings highest in 25 years

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 26, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Ghost sightings highest in 25 yearsSpooky sightings of ghouls, ghosts and evil spirits are higher than they have been in the past 25 years, according to a new report on haunted Britain.

There have been nearly 1,000 reports of demonic activity in the past quarter of a century, with Yorkshire the nation's most ghostly county.

Encounters with devils, demons and evil spirits are as widespread today as they were in medieval times, researchers claim.

The research was led by the UKs leading authority on the unexplained Lionel Fanthorpe who studied various archives and websites as well as his own reports to identify all sightings and recordings of supernatural beings with satanic qualities.

The study found that despite being in time of accelerating technology, 21st century Britons have not turned their back on ghouls, boggarts, hell-hounds, witches, wizards, banshees and black magic curses, with a whopping 968 reports of demonic activity in the past 25 years.

The report indentifies Yorkshire as the centre of ghostly goings-on demonic activity with 74 reports of demons, including Uncabus and Succubus (male and female demons that make sexual attacks on sleeping victims), instances of demonic possession and sightings of hell hounds, water demons and demons with repulsive forms such as ghouls and werewolves.

Sightings of demons in Yorkshire have included a hideous shadow-like hell-hound with no discernible facial features which collided with a car between Northallerton and Leeming Bar on the A684. A sea-going water demon has also been reported off Filey Bay in Yorkshire. Witnesses claimed to have seen a ghostly creature with a long neck, a vast serpentine body and glowing eyes.

Devonshire rated second in the study with 57 reports of sinister activity, mainly from encounters with or sightings of demons with devil like qualities.

On Dartmoor there have been reports that the demonic shape of a man named Stephens who committed suicide still appears and bodes ill for those who encounter it his grave. The apparition is described as hideously skeletal and dressed in the ragged remnants of a grey robe.

Third in the ghoulish league table is Somerset, which hosts the highest number of monsters and has 51 sightings or reports of demonic entities, with Wiltshire coming in fourth with 46 sightings of demons.

Wiltshire is one of the most popular areas for sightings of phantom dogs, shucks or hell-hounds. At Black Dog Hill near Black Dog Woods in Chapmanslade, there are reports of a huge black hound with eyes like red hot coals.

People in Inverness report sightings of 13 water ghosts in the last 25 years, evil spirits whose main purpose is to lure their victims into dangerous water and then drown them. The water ghosts contribute to the area's overall total of 39 demonic beings and one of the most notorious water ghosts resides in the area of Boat of Garten, which lies on each side of the River Spey, near Chapeltown and Tulloch Moor. The paranormal reports from Boat of Garten involve an ancient, inscribed stone visible when the river is at its lowest. According to legend, the stone is cursed and guarded by a malevolent water-demon, or kelpie-type entity, who protects it savagely. Anyone touching it or attempting to move it is said to become prey to this aquatic, demonic being.

The Demonic Britain report was carried out for the latest DVD release of US TV series Supernatural, normally broadcast on the cable channel Living.

Lionel Fanthorpe said: This report clearly shows we are a nation still rich in sightings and reports of devils, demons and evil spirits of various forms.

"The present human population is many times greater than it was in the past. Therefore the more people that there are, statistically, the more potential encounters they might have with these unpleasant, non-human entities.

Boy, 11, ages five times faster than normal

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 26, 2010 | | 5 comments »
progeria diseaseHe is suffering from the extremely rare Atypical Progeria Syndrome. In fact, he is the only person in the world known to have the condition.

The cruel disease has resulted in premature arthritis for Harry, who lives in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. His skin is thinning and the bones in his fingers are eroding.

Doctors are unsure of how Harry's illness will develop because no one else in the world has it.

The ageing is caused by a genetic mutation and the longest someone with a similar condition has survived is 26.

Harry must take painkillers every day and finds lying in bed painful.

He also has to endure people staring at him in the street.

"I can do a lot of things other children can do, but sometimes it stops me doing what I like doing because I ache," said Harry, who lives with mum Sharon, dad John and sister Emma.

"It feels weird and hurts most when I'm in bed. I get upset when people who don't know me stare and it's annoying going to hospitals."

Harry's mum, Sharon, explained the torture that the family is going through.

She said: "It's just a sit and wait game. Because the change in Harry's gene is unique, they cannot say what's going to happen.

"We have had our tears and the 'why us' moments like every family would have. But we have to remember he is walking, talking and is in mainstream school."

The world's first push-up bra found at museum

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 26, 2010 | | 0 comments »
The world's first push-up bra has been discovered in storage at a museum in London.

Bosses at the Science Museum say this 200-year-old lingerie is the first known example of what would one day become the WonderBra.

The lacy creation dates back to the early 1800s and even features special pads designed to give the added appearance of "Hello Boys" cleavage.

While the aged bra might not meet modern design standards, most men still wouldn't mind seeing Eva Herzigova in it. A spokesperson for Science Museum in London said that while we think of body modifying garments as being a recent innovation the bra shows they are centuries old.

The bra will only be on display during a special evening show at the museum next Wednesday, 28th April.

Man throws away £100k winning scratchcard

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 0 comments »
A Sheffield postal worker has revealed that he accidentally binned a £100,000 winning scratchcard after misunderstanding the rules.

Cemal Celikkanat said that his life has been wrecked because of the mistake.

The 38-year-old told the Sheffield Star that he had mistakenly thought the three £100,000 symbols on Camelot's £100,000 Blue game had to be in the same row to win.

However, by the time he had realised his error, he had already thrown the card away and was unable to find it again.

"When I found out I felt dizzy and dropped to my knees - it was like being hit over the head. I threw away £100,000," he admitted. "I feel so terrible, I think about it every day, it's had a massive impact on my life."

Celikkanat went on to say that he had subsequently split up with his wife over rows about their financial problems. The father-of-three also claimed that he has been playing scratchcards for six years and is now concerned over how many other winning tickets he may have thrown away.

National Lottery operators Camelot maintains that it will only pay out if the winning scratchcard is produced.

Two-headed bobtail lizard found in Australia

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 2 comments »
It's been a while since we've had a decent two-headed animal on these pages. So, without further ado, we proudly present… the two-headed lizard.

The two-headed bobtail (a type of skink native to Australia, also known as the Shingleback) was rescued in Coogee, New South Wales, by workers from a reptile park.

Now housed at the reptile park in Henley Brook, Perth, it's doing well - despite the fact that two-headed lizards tend to not have very long life expectancies.

The lizard - which doesn't just have two heads, but has a set of forelegs on either side of each head - is even able to eat with both mouths.

The major downside of having two heads is that it makes moving around quite difficult, and the larger of the two heads has a tendency to try and attack the smaller head.

The bobtail's brother, who has just the one head, is also housed at the park.

Worst car parking ever gets $500 fine

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 0 comments »
A woman who was responsible for one of the worst ever attempts at parking a car has been fined $500.

Tripta Kaushal was caught on camera as she tried to park her BMW X5 in the car park of a gym in Thornhill, Canada.

As the 62-year-old tried to move into a space, she lunged forward, jumping her car onto the bonnet (and to be honest, roof) of two other vehicles.

She then fled the scene and was only identified after CCTV footage was reviewed by cops, who presumably took some time to stop laughing.

Kaushal appeared at Ontario Court of Justice for failing to report the incident and was fined the $500 -- meaning we get to laugh at this clip again. The judge also ordered her to pay damages to the owners of the other cars and placed her on six months probation.

NASA reveal photos of sun as never seen before

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 0 comments »
NASA have revealed a stunning set of photographs and videos of the sun showing its solar activity in more detail than ever seen before.

The images were taken from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) - a spacecraft specifically designed to study the sun.

Some show detail of material streaming outward and away from sunspots, while others revel extreme close-ups of activity on the sun’s surface.

NASA say it is important to remember that these solar activities directly affect everything on Earth and that each solar flare can explode with the energy of 100 megaton hydrogen bombs.

SDO will take high-resolution measurements of solar flares and when NASA say high-res they mean it -- each day it will send 1.5 terabytes of data, that's the same as 500,000 songs on an iPod.

"These initial images show a dynamic sun that I had never seen in more than 40 years of solar research,” said Richard Fisher, director of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

"SDO will change our understanding of the sun and its processes, which affect our lives and society. This mission will have a huge impact on science, similar to the impact of the Hubble Space Telescope on modern astrophysics.”

Football club trained on autobahn

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Fulham were forced to have a training session on the German autobahn on their way to their Europa League semi-final with Hamburg.

The team had to drive across Europe because of the volcanic ash crisis, and an accident on the motorway resulted in the team coach being stuck in a three-hour traffic jam.

Roy Hodgson's men were nearing the end of a 17-hour trip, so the Fulham boss took advantage of the delay by conducting a light workout by the side of the road.

Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer said: "It's not ideal preparation but it was good to get out and stretch.

"Whether you come by bus or plane it's going to be difficult to get to a final.

"We have clocked up the miles and this time it hasn't been the best but we're professionals and just have to get on with it."

Man returns stolen Jaffa Cakes after 50 years

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Thursday, April 22, 2010 | | 0 comments »
A pensioner has returned a packet of Jaffa Cakes he stole as a 15-year-old schoolboy half a century ago.

John Bibby took the biscuits while working at a coffee bar on a holiday camp in Skipsea, East Yorkshire.

But the guilt has stayed with him ever since so he finally decided to confess all to his former boss Leslie Simpson, reports the Daily Mail.

Mr Bibby, 65, bought a packet for 92p and drove nearly 50 miles from his home in York to own up to Mr Simpson, 79, who lives near Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Retired teacher Mr Bibby said: "I've always had a sweet tooth, I was hungry and thought I would have just one Jaffa Cake from a packet. But I ended up eating the whole lot and never told anybody about it.

"I still felt guilty and decided it was finally time to own up, so I tracked Les down and phoned him up.

"I drove to see him and immediately said, "Les, I have something to confess". I pulled out the pack of Jaffa Cakes and told him the story, the first time I have ever admitted what I did to anybody. It felt like a weight off my shoulders.

"He was lost for words, absolutely amazed I had remembered this because he didn't have a clue about it. We ended up having a good laugh about it."

Mr Simpson, who sold his coffee shops in 1972 and became an artist, said: "He must have felt guilty about it all these years, but I knew nothing about it. It's 50 years ago. He didn't need to worry about it, I mean what's a packet of Jaffa Cakes? I don't even like Jaffa Cakes.

"From the look on his face I think he thought I was going to tell him off after all these years. We ended up roaring with laughter about it."

U.S. Unveils New $100 Bill

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 21, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke unveiled a new $100 bill equipped with two new security features.

The bill will go into circulation Feb. 10, 2011.

The Fed, along with the Treasury Department, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the U.S. Secret Service, "continuously monitor the counterfeiting threats" for each denomination and redesign decisions are made based on those threats, Mr. Bernanke said.

"This job has become more complex in recent years as technology advances and U.S. dollar flows expand and increase," he added.

The bill—the highest denomination of all U.S. notes—circulates widely around the world, with circulation in the past 25 years growing to $890 billion from $180 billion.

About two-thirds of all $100 notes circulate outside the U.S.; Mr. Bernanke said the agencies must ensure people around the world are aware of the design change. Over the next several months, officials at the agencies will work to educate cash handlers, consumers and others about the design and explain how to use its security features.

The 6.5 billion or so $100 notes in circulation now will remain legal tender, Mr. Bernanke said.

The new bill's security features include a blue 3-D Security Ribbon on the front of the note that contains images of bells and 100s, which move and change from one to the other as you tilt the note, according to joint release from the agencies.

Another security feature is the "Bell in the Inkwell" image that changes color from copper to green when the note is tilted, an effect that makes it appear and disappear within the inkwell. (For more on the redesigned note and its features, visit www.newmoney.gov.)

"As with previous U.S. currency redesigns, this note incorporates the best technology available to ensure we're staying ahead of counterfeiters," Mr. Geithner said.

The new design for the $100 note retains three effective security features from the previous design: the portrait watermark of Benjamin Franklin, the security thread, and the color-shifting numeral 100.

LA's first marijuana friendly hotel opens for business

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 21, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Light 'em up! The historic hotel Normandie in Los Angeles's Koreatown held a grand reopening on Tuesday for a special clientele -- marijuana smokers.

The opening on April 20 is no accident, either, as it falls on 4/20, the very unofficial international day for celebrating marijuana.

"It's really a logical step, a logical step. It's a big city. And they needed me down here. And I needed a change," promoter Dennis Peron told the Los Angeles Times.

Real estate investor John Evangelista bought the hotel in January and asked Peron -- a leader of efforts to legalise medical marijuana in California -- to create a "pot-tel," according to the Times.

After its reopening, the Normandie will offer special $420, two-day packages, and "you won't need a towel at the bottom of the door" to hide any of its distinctive sweet smell, promoters said.

Like most issues surrounding the drug, the legal and practical details are murky. For example, it was not known whether you need to have a prescription to smoke and buy marijuana to stay at the hotel -- as needed under California law.

It was also not clear whether a sample of the plant was available with the cost of the room.

There definitely are, however, vending machines in the lobby with tasty snacks, just in case hunger calls in the middle of the night.

Normandie marketer and marijuana rights activist Richard Eastman told the Times that the hotel now has a motto to shape its clientele's outlook: "Forget Amsterdam ... All roads lead to the Normandie".

Skydiver's incredible mid-air rescue

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Wednesday, April 21, 2010 | | 0 comments »
A skydiver who could not pull her parachute ripcord at 14,000ft was saved in mid-air by another freefaller.

Katharina Wagner had jumped more than 1,000 times from aircraft all over her native Germany before the drama.

The 24-year-old, of Braunschweig, was with three friends aboard an Antonov AN 28 plane that took off from Magdeburg airfield.

As she leapt from the aircraft a sudden gust of wind slammed her into the fuselage, reports The Sun.

She hurt her shoulder so badly that she couldn't use her arm to pull the release cord on her parachute.

A member of the ground staff at Magdeburg said: "What happened next was like something out of an action film."

Another female skydiver who jumped simultaneously from the doorway saw what had happened and went after her.

Police spokesman Thomas Kriebitzsch said she made a series of "clever manoeuvres" to reach Ms Wagner and pull the release cord for her.

He said: "Nevertheless, Katharina was unable to steer the parachute and hit a lamppost before sprawling on a main road."

She is now being treated in hospital for a broken arm and injuries to both legs. She is expected to make a full recovery at the Magdeburg University Clinic.

A tourist attraction where thrill-seekers jump off the top of a 855ft tall building has opened in the US.

During the SkyJump decelerator ride in in Las Vegas, jumpers fall at 40mph from the 108th floor of the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino Tower held only by a thin cable.

A specially designed machine then controls the pace of the fall and guide wires keep riders - who each pay $99 - from straying off course.

Bosses say the attraction is said to offer stunning views during the 15 second fall… if you can bare to keep your eyes open.

A spokesperson for SkyJump Las Vegas said: "Between screams of excitement and the rush of wind in their hair, riders will experience an unmatched view of the city day or night and a thrill that will last a lifetime."

The attraction has been inspected by Guinness World Records which has declared it the highest commercial decelerator descent - breaking the previous record set by SkyJump at Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre with a height of 764.4 feet.

Icelandic Volcano Creates Beautiful Sunsets

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 0 comments »
The plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which is now inching across Europe's skies, is creating vivid red sunsets while thwarting airline travel plans. The phenomenon could last for days, and depending on how long the volcano continues to erupt, it could spread volcanic clouds all around the Northern Hemisphere, a scientist says.

The volcanic sunsets might even be glimpsed from the United States if the volcano keeps erupting, but chances for that are slim, experts say.

"Once it stops erupting it will take a few days to settle out. As long as there's ash in the atmosphere or any pollutant for that matter, you'll see these alterations in the color we see in the sky," said Jay Miller, a volcanologist at Texas A&M University.

Volcanic sunsets

Onlookers are already attesting to the multihued effects.

Yesterday, one sky gazer along the outskirts of Athens, Greece, captured the sunset enshrouded by billows of smoke, noting "what caught my attention is the fact that two of my German shepherds had their nose pointed at a 45-degree angle and sniffing the air," Anthony Ayiomamitis told Spaceweather.com.

Another onlooker, Gareth Pinckard, shot a scene from Snaefell Mountain in Ireland saying, "Unbelievably vivid colors, the colors did not look real!!"

Here's what's behind the sunsets:

Once ejected into the atmosphere, the sulfur dioxide spewed from volcanoes can react to form sulfate aerosols, which are tiny particles suspended in the air. Both ash and aerosols can scatter the sun's rays, giving a sunset its apparent color. Since the plume hasn't made its way into a part of the upper atmosphere called the stratosphere, we're likely to see more reds and oranges in sunsets, rather than purple colors, according to Brian Toon, chair of the University of Colorado, Boulder's atmospheric and oceanic sciences department.

Particles in the air normally scatter incoming sunlight — this is why the sky is blue. Sunsets (and sunrises) appear reddish because the sun's rays have more of the atmosphere to travel through when they are low on the horizon, versus when they are high in the sky during the day. When the rays have more atmosphere to travel through, only the longer waves at the red end of the spectrum can make it. Sulfate aerosols in particular can intensify this effect by adding more obstacles for the light to get through.

And under certain circumstances, purple sunsets will result.

"If there's a volcanic cloud in the stratosphere, the [sun's] light will bounce back to your eye and you'll see it," Toon said in a telephone interview today. "It looks purplish, because the ozone absorbs the red light and air molecules scatter away the blue and you are left with the purple color."

Colorful sunsets for all?

How long the volcanic plume persists and where it travels depends on Mother Nature – whether the volcanic eruption continues, how the prevailing winds take shape, rain and other weather factors.

"That ash is likely to hang around for a few days after the eruption is completed," Miller told LiveScience. "We don't have any way of knowing how long this eruption will continue. Historically in Iceland over the past 1,000 to 1,500 years most of the eruptions only last a few days. Some last for a few weeks. A very few have lasted for significantly longer than that."

He added, "As long as the eruption continues and there's plenty of ice in the middle of this glacier for this magma to react with," we'll see the ash plume.

The ash, which consists of jagged bits of glassy materials, is created when the sizzling hot magma pours out of the volcano and hits the cold glacial ice.

"Imagine if you took a glass and put it into a furnace and got it red hot and dropped it into a bucket of cold water," Miller said. "It would just shatter into a billion pieces." That's essentially what's happening when the lava hits the surrounding ice to create the huge ash plume.

The prevailing winds will push the cloud in different directions and so as you get farther away from the initial plume, the ash particles will disperse more.

Even so, "I think we'll see evidence of this certainly throughout Europe for days to come after this episode, after it stops," Miller said.

But rain could wash away the chance of colorful sunsets in the United States.

"It's unlikely any of this volcanic ash will get as far as the United States," Toon said. "But it is possible. It's just rare. It's likely the stuff will get washed out before it ever gets here."

Essentially, it would likely disperse or fall out of the atmosphere before the prevailing winds (which move west to east at the latitudes of Iceland) could move it all the way around the globe.

Turkmen president wants to close "Hell's Gate"

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 8 comments »

Turkmenistan's quest to triple its already copious gas reserves has a fiery new focus: a flaming pit in the middle of the Karakum Desert.

A gaping crater dubbed "Hell's Gate" has been spewing flames and smoldering in a remote part of the isolated Central Asian nation since a Soviet-era drilling accident nearly 40 years ago.

It has attracted some of the few foreign tourists who travel to Turkmenistan -- and hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube videos such as here .

Now it has caught the eye of President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. He visited the crater this week and ordered local authorities to look for ways to get rid of it or ensure it would not hinder the development of nearby gas fields, state television in the tightly controlled nation reported.

Berdymukhamedov said that "existing anomalies have hindered the accelerated industrial development of the subsoil riches of central Karakum," according to the report.

The crater, about 60 meters (yards) wide and 20 meters deep, appeared in 1971 when the ground caved under a drilling rig and exposed a methane-choked cave. Soviet geologists decided to burn off the gas and it has been burning ever since.

Turkmenistan, which produced about 75 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas a year, wants to triple output in the next 20 years to boost export revenues and expand sales beyond Russia, China and Iran to Western Europe, India and Pakistan.

Amazing sight as sunset hits waterfall in Yosemite Park

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 0 comments »
It may appear to show lave flowing down a volcano, but this image is fact a waterfall in Yosemite National Park, California.

The amazing image was taken as sunlight hit the Horsetail Falls.

For just a few days each year the sun sets over the falls creating a vivid red amber glow - leading it to be re-named Yosemite Firefall.

The stunning moment was captured by wildlife photographer Penny Adams who has been recording America's most beautiful locations for 26 years.

The 37-year-old, from Tennessee, said this was the first time she had photographed Horsetail Falls and it was an incredible sight to witness.

Adams said, "I nervously watched the weather forecasts all week before deciding to make the trip to Yosemite Park, I had to make sure the conditions were just right for me to capture the perfect photograph.

"The whole experience was so very exciting, I made the drive back to the bay area after sunset and I didn't sleep very well that night because I couldn't wait to see what the film would hold.

"I was very pleased and relieved with the results because it was one of the first moments as a professional photographer that I had accurately captured a magical moment in nature.

Horsetail Falls was a real "firefall" in the 1870s when a hotel proprietor began a night time show for visitors by pushing bark embers over the nearby Glacier Point Cliff, creating a waterfall of fire and sparks.

Footage of the famous firefall was used in the 1950s film The Caine Mutiny, before the park banned the man-made attraction in 1968..

Iceland volcano song aids pronunciation of Eyjafjallajokull

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 0 comments »

An Icelandic musician has composed a lighthearted song to attempt to help people remember how to pronounce the name of the volcano which has caused travel chaos.

Eyjafjallajokull - pronounced roughly ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kuutl – has confused many people and has proven especially testing for newsreaders more accustomed to easier words, or simply English.

The name is three Icelandic words formed into one by a process linguists call “agglutination”, where separate ideas are put together to form a composite idea.

In this case, Eyjafjallajokull means “island-mountain-glacier”, so some have concluded it may not refer to the volcano at all but, more accurately, “the glacier on the mountain which looks like an island”.

It is likely the volcano has been called many things that are not its proper name since it threw up vast plumes of ash clouds and forced airspace across Europe to be closed.

Eliza Geirsdottir Newman, the musician in question, performed her song to the broadcaster Al Jazeera to help people remember the correct pronunciation.

Playing a ukulele, she sang: “Eyjafjallajokull is a long, long name/ For such a small glacier, with such notorious fame/ And Eyjafjallajokull has caused quite a stir/ And no-one can fly anywhere except the birds/ Please stop it Eyjafjallajokull.”

Frozen Bodies To Be Retrieved From Everest

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 1 comments »
A team of mountaineers are planning to retrieve the bodies of climbers who have lost their lives on Mount Everest.

It is thought as many as 150 bodies are still on the mountainside, beyond the reach of recovery because of treacherous climbing conditions.

Around 300 people have died along a perilous stretch of the world's highest peak known as the "death zone" because of its lack of oxygen and treacherous terrain.

The Nepali climbers, known as Sherpas, are also aiming to clean up decades-old rubbish from the mountain in what is being called the world's highest ever clean-up campaign.

Sherpas - the indigenous people who live in the Himalayas - are expert guides and porters who are known for their physical stamina and knowledge of the mountains.

Namgyal Sherpa, who will lead the operation - called Extreme Everest Expedition 2010 - has climbed the world's tallest peak seven times.

He said no-one has ever tried to clean above 8,000m (26,246ft) before.

"This is the first time we are cleaning at that height. It is very difficult and dangerous," he explained.

The group will risk the zone's thin air and freezing temperatures to pick up empty oxygen bottles, gas canisters, torn tents, ropes, and utensils lying between the South Col and the 8,850m (29,035ft) summit.

"We'll bring down the body of a Swiss climber who died in the mountain in 2008 and cremate it below the base camp, for which we have got the family's consent," Namgyal added.

The team hope to bring five bodies down from the summit.

New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay Sherpa were the first to climb Mount Everest's summit in 1953.

More than 4,000 climbers have since scaled the mountain.

Funeral urns found at bottom of Swiss lake

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Divers searching for a boat sun-shield that had fallen in Lake Zurich Sunday instead discovered thirteen funeral urns holding human ashes, Swiss police said.

The Zurich canton's Office for Waste, Water and Energy has lodged a complaint for infringing the peace of the dead.

This kind of mass burial in such a location is "unacceptable", the office spokesman said. "Lake Zurich is our source for drinking water and many people swim in it", he added.

After a similar incident in 2008, regional officials had said the commercial scattering of human ash in the lake, without permission, was liable to a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs (35,000 euros or $47,000).

Dead rodent found in canned spaghetti

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | | 0 comments »

An Ohio mother says she found a dead rodent in a can of spaghetti and meatballs.

"I opened it up and my face was very close to it and immediately you could tell there was a dead rodent on top, in fact you couldn't even see the spaghetti and meatballs at all," Jennifer Aker told television station WCPO.

She called the manufacturer, ConAgra Foods, to complain and try to figure out how such a mistake could happen. The company asked her to take a still photo of the supposed rodent and then freeze the entire contents of the can so they could be analyzed later.

Her nephew Daniel took it one step further, though, and recorded a video of the can being emptied into a Tupperware container. The blurry image shows a large brown clump falling from the can of Chef Boyardee-brand spaghetti and meatballs.

The family posted the video on YouTube, where it has more than 5,400 views since it was posted on April 14.

ConAgra released a statement about the alleged rodent, and sent a courier to the Aker home to pick up the tainted can of spaghetti so it could be analyzed.

"We take all consumer inquires seriously, and when a consumer has a bad experience, we work with them to determine the source of the problem and correct it. We also work with them to make up for their experience as best as we are able," a spokesperson said.

Most people have looked for themselves on Google Street View, but few find themselves as many times as Wendy Southgate -- she appears a whopping 43 times.

Wendy was repeatedly snapped by the Google car as she walked her dog Trixie near her home in Elmswell, Suffolk.

The 52-year-old says she didn't know what the Google car was, and that it was only when her husband looked on Google Street View that she realised.

Husband Terry had been looking for himself on Goole when he spotted his wife, and then saw her again, and again, and again.

Vandals cover Rio's Christ statue with graffiti

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 19, 2010 | | 0 comments »
Vandals covered Rio de Janeiro's towering Christ the Redeemer statue with spray-painted graffiti, marring the world-famous monument in an act Rio's mayor called a "crime against the nation."

The vandals covered the head, arms and chest of the 130-foot (40-metre) statue, which looks out over Rio's dramatic vista of beaches and mountains, using scaffolding that had been erected to carry out maintenance work.

"Those criminals will pay for what they've done. They will go to jail," Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes was quoted as saying in Friday's O Globo newspaper. "Rio de Janeiro and Brazil do not deserve this."

Access to the statue had been closed after recent rains that caused mudslides around the city.

Phrases scrawled onto the statue included "When the cat's away, the rats will play," as well as apparent references to Rio residents who were killed or who disappeared in recent crimes, O Globo reported.

The soapstone statue, completed in 1931, sits atop the 2,300-foot (700-metre) Corcovado mountain and is visible from much of the city.

Rio extensively used the image, along with bucolic beaches and the popular Sugar Loaf mountain, in its successful bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Charles the cat makes 1,300-mile journey

Posted by Ivica Miskovic | Monday, April 19, 2010 | | 0 comments »
A tabby cat named Charles made his way 1,300 miles from his home in New Mexico to Chicago.

The feline's eight month odyssey ended when he was picked up by a rescue shelter in Chicago and he is now being given a free flight home by American Airlines to be reunited with his owner.

Charles vanished when owner Robin Alex was away in New Orleans working for an anti-poverty charity.

She had left a friend to look after the cat.

She said: "I was crushed and I found out while I was away volunteering. I was so upset because I was in New Orleans so there was nothing I could do."

This week she received a call telling her Chicago Animal Care and Control had picked up her wandering cat as a stray and identified him from a tracking microchip embedded between his shoulder blades.

The agency's executive director, Cherie Travis, said: "He's in good condition. He needs a good brushing. He's got a little bit of a cold a little bit of an upper respiratory infection but otherwise he's in great condition."

Miss Alex, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, said she had no idea how he could have made it to Chicago.

She said: "I've moved around a lot. It seems kind of destined that my cat would be a travelling cat."
